We had a great morning at Forest School, with the sunshine streaming beautifully through the trees. The children gathered natural foliage and used string to create their own hanging mobiles, enjoying the calm and creativity of the outdoors 🌿✨

What a beautiful spot to embrace our current English theme of contemporary animism—similar to forest bathing, which encourages us to immerse ourselves in nature to support our mental and physical wellbeing. We also explored the idea that everything in nature has its own consciousness and ‘spirit’, from rocks and trees to rivers and insects. We reflected on how some indigenous communities live in balance and harmony with the natural world, even in today’s technology-driven soc

We spent the day as designers, rounding off our Volcanoes and Mountains topic by designing, making and testing cable cars. We began by investigating how pulley systems work before creating our own designs and adding the finishing touches 🤩 Testing day is always a favourite in DT, and it didn’t disappoint! Both groups achieved well against the design criteria, and the cable car systems were a real success 🌟

Today, we kicked off our new Everest writing unit with an exciting Explorer Experience Day! During our Forest School session, the children explored the contents of an explorer’s backpack, developed their navigation skills by guiding a partner around the woodland using clear directions, and worked collaboratively to build a small emergency shelter. Back in the classroom, we examined world maps to locate the Himalayas and Mount Everest. A fantastic start to our new unit!

Today we had a feast fit for a king… well, a Stone Age one at least! We were so impressed with the Owls' adventurous attitudes as they sampled some unusual foods, including locusts, edible flowers, dates and mustard seeds. As part of our DT work, we explored taste, texture, appearance and smell, while also thinking about nutritional value and seasonality. This deliciously different tasting session was perfect preparation for designing our very own Stone Age soup or stew!

It’s so lovely when history takes precedence over football and other playground games! Our ‘Discover’ topic, Stone Age to Iron Age, has truly captured the children’s imaginations—they’ve been using their break times to build their own Stone Age camps. From stick shelters to pretend fire pits, their enthusiasm is shining through. We can’t wait to see how their ideas develop as we journey further through the topic!

What great designers we have in our Owls class! We finished our DT project with a bridge for the Polar Express into the North Pole. We tested them today and they ALL withstood our design criteria. We wonder how many budding engineers we have in our little school?!
